Food banks help as more in Monroe become hungry

More Pennsylvanians are having difficulty affording food, a recent study says. And local charities and food banks resoundingly concur with that conclusion.

About 20 percent of all Pennsylvanians said they had trouble affording food for themselves and their families, according to the study conducted by Gallup and the Food Research and Action Center. Read more →

Emergency service company donates help to flood damaged Family Promise center

The Paul Davis Emergency Services, a company that donates time and services to those who are physically or financially unable to improve their properties, were busy May 27 helping the Family Promise of Monroe County.

Family Promise, a non-profit organization that helps families in need, found themselves in need due to the excessive amount of rain and snow melt that occurred at the end of March. Read more →

The 10th Annual Mental Health Awareness Walk was held May 21. The theme of the walk was Hope — The Spirit of Recovery.

Speakers included Sheila Theodorou, Administrator of Carbon-Monroe-Pike MH/MR; Patty Fascio, Associate Regional Director of Community Care Behavioral Health; Representative Mario Scavello; and Stephen Washington, Chief of Staff for Representative John Siptroth. Numerous persons in recovery offered testimonies at the park and provided the highlight of the day. Read more →

Pocono letter carriers will be picking up donations for area food pantries on Saturday during the 18th annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

Pocono residents can help by putting non-perishable food items in a grocery bag and placing it at their mailbox. In communities with cluster boxes, donations can be left on top of the boxes. Read more →
